Juanjo Guillem is founder, soloist and artistic director of NEOPERCUSIÓN.
A passionate musician devoted since the beginning of his career to new creation, Juano stands out in his commitment with the most emblematic musicians of our time. He has performed all the most important works for percussion of composers as Boulez, Ligeti, Berio, Carter, Aperghis, Ishii, Stockhausen, Hosokawa, Xenakis, Manoury, Crumb, Reich, Sciarrino, Cerha, etc.
Interested in broadening his instrument’s repertoire and push forward for the evolution of the concept of percussion and percussion performer, Guillem has commissioned and premiered more than 70 pieces by José Luis Turina, Jesús Torres, J.M. Sánchez Verdú, Mauricio Sotelo, Ramón Humet, Thierry Pecou,Gabriel Erkoreka, among many others.
He have performed concerts for percussion and orchestra signed by great composers like Takemitsu, Cerha, Gubaidulina, Norgard, Tan Dun, Torres, Macmillan, etc.As soloist he had performed in the most prestigious concert halls throughout Europe, Asia and America; such as the Salzburg Festival, Ljubljana International Fest, Madrid’s National Music Auditorium, FESThemus Internationell Festival, Music d’Aujordhui-Perpinyan, China Conservatory, Senyang Concert Hall, Manhattan School of Music, RNCM Manchester,
Monterrey Festival, Reina Sofia Museum, Contemporary Music Festival of Alicante , BBVA Contemporary Music Series, March Foundation.
Juanjo Guillem regularly records some of the most important pieces written for percussion instruments with prestigious record labels such as Kairos, Verso, Naxos, etc., and and also collaborates with different broadcast networks.
He is regularly invited to to teach master classes at numerous prestigious music schools throughout the world, like the Manhattan School of Music, the Royal Northern College of Music, the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, different Conservatories and Schools of Music in Amsterdam, Geneva, Basel, Strasbourg , Peking, Seoul and Spain.
He teaches at and coordinates the Department of Advanced Degree Qualification in Music and the Master Degree of Percussion at the Centro Superior Katarina Gurska, in Madrid.
Juanjo Guillem received his musical training in Spain (Conservatories of Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona), France (CNR of Strasburg) and England (RNCM of Manchester).
At age of 18 he was named timpanist and principal percussionist of the Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu of Barcelona. Two years later he played lead percussionist in the Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, and since 1999 he holds the position of timpanist and principal percussionist in the National Orchestra of Spain.
